To celebrate the 5th birthday of Good Netlabels, a site devoted to the pr…

To celebrate the 5th birthday of Good Netlabels, a site devoted to the promotion of noteworthy endevours within the underground scene, we have decided to release a new album in the GNs Compilation series. It is the third project in the series, but for the first time ever the contributions have been selected in the course of a contest. Over the last three months we have collected entries that would then undergo a careful selection. In order to make the process as fair and unbiased as possible, music journalists, visual artists as well as musicians have been asked to make the selection.
This newest part of the GNs Compilation series, entitled Empty Shadows, is an international project that marks a shift in the approach to and the preparation of the compilation. While Jazzy Puzzle and Break Asymmetry were collections of recordings created specifically for these compilations by artists invited to these projects, this time it is Good Netlabels readers that contributed to the compilation, by the same token showcasing the underground scene.
Once again the author of the cover is Justyna Bielecka. All translations have been done by Ola Górska, and the sound and mastering have been done by Cuefx.

Lowriders remains true to form, keeping it skewed, crooked, and freaky…

Lowriders remains true to form, keeping it skewed, crooked, and freaky as hell, in this latest limited edition compilation.
POWER SHUFFLES compiles seven forward thinking juke/footwork inspired tunes from all over the planet, into one vicious slab of vinyl goodness. Created with a root in the Chi Town sound, but operating somewhere within the fringe between genres, this album delivers a hyper fusion of style. Featuring: +verb, EVS, Julien Mier, Acre, Leatherface, Damscray, Motëm.

+verb kicks off the album with “Cortex”, a smooth and melodic, synth funk footwork masterpiece, oozing with soul. EVS drops “The Twin Paradox”, where silky smooth pads and synths juxtapose a hard hitting beat that drifts into an almost hardcore tempo, making this tune a dance floor killer. Julien Mier finishes up the A-Side with “As It Is”, a delightful little number, sounding like a glitchy wind-up music box filled to the brim with bubbling arpeggiation and crunchy beats.

The flip gets darker with Acre’s “I Don’t Waste Steps”. This tune comes in with a woozy metallic hit that moves in and out of the ether, before unleashing vocal chops and beat syncopations true to the Chicago aesthetic. Leatherface keeps it hood with “Watch Me Do My Thang”, a menacing anthem sounding like something on the soundtrack for a thugged out horror flick. Damscray’s “Real Street Stalkah” is up next to destroy your ears with its relentless drums and punishing bassline. Finishing up the B-Side is “Work”. A bone rattling, heavyweight, terrorizer brought to you by Motëm.

Danish electronic artist Rumpistol, aka Jens B. Christiansen, releas…

Danish electronic artist Rumpistol, aka Jens B. Christiansen, releases his fourth and most ambitious album yet – Floating – a collaboration with LA based vocalist Red Baron that further explores the post dub-step vocal territories opened up on last year’s Talk To You EP. With tighter song structures, intimate lyrics and the Baron’s ecstatic vocal projections, the two create a parallel world in which the domestic breakdowns of wintry Copenhagen are filtered through surreal sun-bleached Californian dreams, resulting in a robotic and hypnagogic hybrid of soul. The sound, while still recognizably “Rumpistol” in its organically unstable clicks and gurgles, marks an evolution in Christiansen’s thinking, shedding light on the interior landscapes of existential crisis and bliss that he’s been essaying over the last ten years.

The introduction of Red Baron does a great deal to carry this forward. Many of the tracks were written in partnership with the elusive vocalist on an almost subconscious level, through a process where different phrases were recorded until the atmosphere was properly expressed. It’s through the Baron’s heavily processed voice, hovering between male and female timbres, that the ghost of American pop culture finds itself here too. In this way Grace Jones stands tall in a frozen stream on I’m Not Listening, Lionel Richie gets stuck in traffic on a bad trip in Colors Breaking while Kanye pushes his auto-tuned bicycle through the blizzard of Floating. But as the arctic arpeggiated synths let you know, the album is more about the future than any past, a future where Rumpistol and Red Baron dare to take current genres from the post dub-step and wonky scenes and defy them with the human voice for a dystopic soul music of their own.

Rumpistol
“Rum” is the Danish word for space or room. Since 2003 Rumpistol has released 3 albums, 2 EPs plus lots of remixes and received airplay by John Peel among others. He also runs his own label, Rump Recordings, and has composed various music for TV, theater, films and games. Rumpistol’s live performances include festivals and venues all over Europe as well as in Mexico, China and Russia. He has created live soundtracks and appeared in various improvised setups and constellations. In 2010 he was nominated for the Qwartz Electronic Music Award in the Discovery category for his album “Dynamo”.

Red Baron
As a Danish expatriate in the LA scene, Red Baron has slowly undermined the underground with his addictive moves and subliminal expressions. He has already appeared among the likes of Deerhoof, Don Bolles (The Germs) and Sonns, the latter debuting on Stones Throw in May. The Baron also sings in The Late Great Fitzcarraldos, which in 2011 was nominated for the Nordic Music Prize for their debut album. Aged 6 he fell into a depression when faced with the fact that his red hair and whiter than white skin would never match up to the Jamaican model/singer he adored so much. The rest is history.

Montgomery Clunk is Silviu Badea, from Bucharest, Romania. For his vinyl debut, we picked the freshest and most adventurous tracks Clunk has released to date. His Mondegreen EP is the essence of two years’ research in bass music. Clunk delivers a minimal version of maximalism, combining crackpot neon melodies with complex and well-defined beat patterns. Mondegreen is unmistakable Montgomery Clunk, with its expertly entwined textures and solitary beats achieving surreal character not only once. In his hands, Hip Hop becomes a glistening future thing again.

Last year in April, there was an event here in Serbia that we were not ready for or to be exact- we did not know what to expect. A small group of people had an idea that became a movement. They gave something and asked for nothing in return except for one small thing and that is, Share everything. Share a cookie, share <3 , share information, share the drama, share 1 spliff, share $, share a pillow, share knowledge, share us some tickets… And they did. IT WAS FUCKING FREE! For three days Belgrade became the center of the modern world for us.Nothing else mattered. We had it all. The lectures, the music, the people, the experience, the ideas, all of it for free. And it all started with a simple RT.

People from Google,MIT, Bloggers, Reporters, Musicians, Designers, Directors, Revolutionists, Visionaries, Producers, they all attended this free cocktail of knowledge and information that is Share Conference. And it’s happening again this April and we can’t fucking wait for it to start!

The thing that gets us all fired up for this year’s conference is the line up of the SHAREbyNight events which will feature performances by Total Freedom, Nguzunguzu, Redlight, DMX Krew, Kingdom, and Tim Exile to name a few.

My name is Jeremy Rike and I’m 29. I live in Columbus OH and record m…

My name is Jeremy Rike and I’m 29. I live in Columbus OH and record music under the name Dose. Although I am very thankful for it’s discovery, I never intended for my music to be heard by anyone other than my close friends. Prior to Dose I was recording hip-hop beats for a local group but that wasn’t fulfilling me artistically. I knew I wanted to branch out and develop my own unique sound, so I started experimenting with new ambient sounds and started sampling tracks that I grew up on as a kid. My parents got divorced when I was young and I remember my dad turning on the radio at night to a station that played really cheesy sappy romantic love songs about heart ache and love. Although these songs are really lame on the surface, a lot of them contain great hooks and emotion that can be flipped into something new and soulful, (sometimes I get a bit carried away while sampling these songs that I end up jamming out/dancing to these corny tracks, fortunately no one else is around to laugh at me). These ballad based love tracks have sort of become the backbone to my sound now, I love being able to take a track from Michael Bolton or Sinead O’Connor and turn it into something that bangs and at the same time hopefully upholds some sort of deep emotion or feeling for the listener. Like I said before I never intended for my music to go beyond the ears of a handful of friends but I really cant describe how thankful I am that I can share my music with people all over the world now. It’s a nice feeling being able to put yourself and emotions into a piece of music and then have people genuinely have love for it, It’s a great reward. Since my music has been unleashed on the world I have received a lot of kind responses to it and that has given me the drive to take it more seriously and keep on progressing. I recently started recording music with a female friend named Chelsea for a side project we have yet to name. She has an incredible voice and I am providing the backing tracks to her angelic vocals. This side project is a more simplified style than the Dose music I record now but it all still comes from the same part of my soul and it fulfills my inner Indie needs. I hope to continue this musical journey and I really appreciate all of the love I have received from it, I love my listeners and I am so happy to share this music with them.

After the success of “Love Exposure”, mc / producer Broke returns with “Chasing Her”, his first solo album.

This album is delivered in a jazzy soulful tone, mixed with elegant word play by the California emcee. If you into deep lyricism and jazzy soul escapes we highly recommend to give this one a good listen.

The result is an EP hiphop heads young and old can feel!

Shortly after Italy-based music producer Railster released his podca…

Shortly after Italy-based music producer Railster released his podcast [in which I am featured] on Serbian music blog Pixelatique, I was contacted to be the first female featured on their site! Exciting right? Totally!

Completely enamored and cherry by the idea, I began to visualize. Today, on my 26th birthday, I share “The Main Vein”. Featured are thirteen of our latest favourite songs – that mesh well. He’s helped me so much over the years; I wanted to share this moment, this day, and this project, this new beginning with him. It also includes snippets from interviews with Shyvonne and Jasmine Solano. Both artists are featured on my website and will appear in my fifth print magazine in 2012.

This signifies more than a mere pod cast for me; it is a gift to myself and for all of my fans to keep with them in their daily lives. I hope you enjoy my debut.

Long before the current wave of Russian and Eastern European beats and g…

Long before the current wave of Russian and Eastern European beats and glitch producers, Bulgarian duo 1000names were in at the foundation of the sound, debuting with the now classic Melonball Bounce alongside Rustie on Beatnick’s Vol 1 in 2007. Based in Sofia, Bulgaria, their geographic isolation and relatively long musical development has helped Margg and Nikko (their real names) develop a truly individualistic sound: quirky, bubbly, and human. They are identifiably part of the global beats scene without ever being generic.

They released their debut album with French label Eklektik Records, before moving over to Black Acre, dropping the first ever long player on that label. In January 2010 Mary Anne Hobbs invited them to contribute a mix for her legendary BBC Radio 1 show, and since then they’ve been featured and recommended in Pitchfork, XLR8R and every publication of note.

Margg started out as a painter, Nikko as a drummer, giving them a basis in both old school musicality and art history. Taking their name from an Anish Kapoor scultpture they are great collectors and appreciators of culture, and this breadth of vision can be heard in their music and their willingness to embrace new forms.

I’m based in Zurich, Switzerland and go by the name Gards From K…

I’m based in Zurich, Switzerland and go by the name Gards From KC. I started to make basic hiphop beats five years ago with samples from old vinyls and generic drum patterns. I got influenced by new electronic styles and live shows later and my way of doing music passed different periods.

I now work with samples recorded from the normal day life and a lot of plugins and effects. I mostly drive for dragging beats with deep atmospheres and loads of crackle and crisp sounds. I’m still in a very experimental phase of finding and creating something distinctive.

Once i started to connect and work with other people around the world everything is getting more serious. I did a few mixes for great collectives and was participating on some bigger and some smaller compilations. Lately i mostly worked on remixes including the one for my man Sina. which is out on wax and digital since the 5th of Nov. Thanks to all at P:MC!

Like a month ago some folks in London used one of my tracks for their amazing promo video introducing the Moniker Art Fair 2011 in London (http://vimeo.com/29845130).

Currently i’m working on a lot unfinished tracks on my own and with other artists. I will release the best 8-12 tracks soon as a tape for free download!

Very exciting to mention is that i just found a new local event label called Life Bricks!

We’ll try to prepare a mix between live acts, thrilling dj-sets and visual artists. We’ll kick off this in february next year at a pretty cool venue here in Zurich! We expect us much of this and will do our best to mount some unforgettable nights!

I’m really looking forward to play live shows as well as dj-sets in the future!

Thanks to everybody who enjoy or even listen to my music. It has only just started!

My name’s Mike T. I also go by the name of Mikenike, depending…

My name’s Mike T. I also go by the name of Mikenike, depending on how I feel. I’ve been producing music for about 7 months. I’m still a little confused about it all but I know that I love doing it. I spend many hours, day & night messing around with programs and instruments. I literally learn something new every day! I mean, there’s so much I need to learn. I never knew how to play piano or guitar even six months ago I didn’t know what a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) was. I’m extremely ignorant when it comes to music but it keeps me happy, especially knowing that I can express these ideas in my head to other people & maybe help them get through their day. And if I’m lucky hopefully get a few fans here & there. I’m not exactly sure where to place my tracks when it comes to genres. I don’t think about that, at all! It really depends on the mood I’m in. It could sound like some trill hip hop or sometimes it could sound like sentimental jazz. I love making beats though. I could spend all day with a couple samples and mess around recording drum patterns. Whether I got a midi keyboard or an mpc, I’ll find a way to go nuts!

When I’m not making music I always go back to my one true love, painting. Something about it just drives me up the wall, in a good way. If that makes sense to you. Build & destroy. Layers upon layers. tearing through old furniture. It’s a form of therapy for me to just rip a whole through something and start painting it. As a rebellious teen it was my go to thing every time my emotions got the best of me. And now I have music. I owe it all to my homie eKALB (Closed Casket Collective) who introduced me to music production a couple months back. We we’re close friends through out high school and still are but he moved up north to San Francisco, I wish that guy the best! It’s a cold world out there but as long as I got my freedom to express through art & music, I’ll be able to continue living an honest and meaningful life. I’m not sure where this is all going but I’m taking it day by day. Expecting the best but always prepared for the worst. I have an EP coming out this December on an independent label called Strong & Tough Audio. I’m excited for that! We’ll have to wait see what happens in the future. 2012 should be big though…
